Turning Information Into Outcomes: What Governance Really is About

Governance: Turning Information Into Outcomes

For years, you’ve heard me exhort you to implement information governance because “you collected all that information for a reason, right?” and infogov is how you get value from it. And while that’s true, I’m not sure I ever completely brought that sentiment to ground.

So let me now close that gap.

Over the next several posts, I’m going to talk more about what our jobs are really about: namely, to turn INFORMATION into OUTCOMES.

You see, our goal really isn’t just to wrangle information – it’s to do so for a purpose, perhaps to:

  • Get rid of paper.
  • Move to the cloud.
  • Prepare for AI.

Even to “achieve greater compliance” isn’t specific enough, for underneath this lies the far more compelling objective of “reduce risk.” This is the sort of fundamental business issue that captures the attention of your higher-ups – as do issues on the other side of the equation that relate to inspiring opportunities.

We need to remember and, especially, reinforce this as we seek to obtain buy-in from those above, below, and next to us on the organizational chart. If we don’t, we’ll continue to spend a lot of our time shouting into the wind. We won’t be wrong, but we won’t be heard either.

More to come – stay tuned.
