In 1964, U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater told his followers that “extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.” He lost the election by a landslide – too extreme, evidently – but the poetry of that line has always stuck with me, and I often adapt it for use when I am consulting and teaching. Not because I am an extremist, but because I believe strongly that, when managing processes and information, “holism in defense of productivity is no vice.”
